One of the questions I'm asked most often before an in-home newborn session is some version of: 'Should I tidy up?' The short answer is: a little, but not as much as you think. Here's a practical, stress-free guide to getting your home ready so that on the morning of your session, all you need to focus on is your baby.

Think About Light, Not Perfection

Natural light is the foundation of my photography style! It's what gives images that warm, creamy, editorial quality that my clients in across Kent tend to fall in love with. Before your session, have a think about which rooms in your home get the most beautiful light. Don't worry if your home isn't full of floor-to-ceiling glass. I work with whatever light is available and I'll find the best spots.

What space do we need?

My backdrop set up requires a space approx 1 1/2 meters by 1 1/2 meters. This is usually by a patio door or a large window to allow for the best possible light. You may need to move your dining table to one side but I can also figure out what bits need to me moved when I arrive.

What to have ready

You are in your own home so you already know that you have everything you could possibly need. It can be helpful to have some nappies, wipes, dummies and bottles prepped and ready to use if we need them.

You may also want to include some sentimental items in the session, have these ready also!

A little reassurance

I have photographed hundreds of families all across Kent. In houses, flats, bungalows and cottages. Your home is perfect for your photoshoot because it's yours. The goal is comfort, your home is not meant to be pristine or look like a magazine shoot. It just needs to feel like home.
